Severe Weather Plan Strands Students

With the winter season at SFU just ahead, and with memories of the last years snow storm still recent with both the faculty and staff the school released its plan for any future snow storms. This resulting in a fifty thousand dollar price tag to the university.

The new severe weather plan, which has already been implemented, involves installing new gates at the parking lot entrances. This will allow parking services to control who can and can not get off of the mountain in a snow storm.

This new plan has both some benefits and drawbacks. Although it effectively reduces the number of vehicles attempting to drive down the hill during a serious snow storm, it also immobilizes everyone at the school stuck behind it. It can already be seen that many people will not want to get their cars locked on campus and will look to leaving school early on threatening days in order to avoid being locked up. This will help keep a lot of inexperienced, unprepared drivers from attempting the hill in these dangerous conditions, hopefully making the roads safer during major snowstorms.

There is still speculation about whether or not properly equipped drivers will be able to leave campus during snow closures. It does not give reason to hold drivers who were prepared with snow tires up on the mountain with others who are only have all season or winter tires. Although most drivers in the Vancouver region do not prepare for the snow as well as they should, I should have case enough to get myself off of the mountain safely during the upcoming winter season.
