SFU Connect Naming Contest

The name for the new Email system, based on the Zimbra mail system has finally been chosen. This was done through a vote based on submissions received by fellow students. As it turns out with the way the online voting system is set up, there is no notification if you submit the same suggestion as someone else. For some reason or another it was believed that no two people would come up with the same naming suggestion for the system.

As it turns out, they were wrong. When I first saw the request for a name for the new mail suite it didn't take me too long to come up with the name SFU Connect as my submission. Little to my knowledge another student, still in his first year at SFU also submitted the exact same name with a slightly different slogan.

Later that month when the voting process finished I was suddenly greeted on morning by the results of the vote, a rather large win for "Connect" as the new name for the system. This was quite surprising that my name actually won, this was until I saw that the winner was in fact not myself, but this first year student instead.

This was rather infuriating at the time, but it did not take long to get over the small loss. After all in the end, the best name in my opinion, did win the contest.
