HowTo: Print for Free at SFU

First I would like to welcome everybody back to another great semester. Now for those of you who have always wondered, yes their is indeed a way to utilize the print terminals located around campus through web interfaces. The large network printers located on campus are very poorly secured, and are left wide open on the SFU Intranet.

Every network printer on campus runs its own administration web site, similar to that of your wireless router at home. These sites are however, quite insecure. By utilizing basic network scanning methods you will soon be able to locate the IP addresses of printers located throughout campus. Once the printers are located, one can simply upload jobs through the web interface to be released immediately. For the most part, this security through obscurity keeps the general student public from knowing this, but with a little networking knowledge it is not too hard to uncover for yourself.
